How long has the Jerusalem Institute of Multicultural Studies been around?

January 2014 marked our inaugural session! However, we are not new to Bethlehem by any means. The co-founder of The Jerusalem Institute of Multicultural Studies, through her ministry – The Father’s House International, has invested over 9 years in this region through an established House of Prayer that has brought countless interns and staff to Bethlehem over the years for both short and extended visits. The history and beauty of the region along with the many relationships fostered over the years with the precious people are all part of what makes this “home” for us.

Who can apply?

Our last class represented 5 different countries and a wide range of ages from an American international studies college student, to a Zimbabwean bishop.  You must be at least 18 years of age to apply and note that all classes are taught in English. Entry into Israel subject to visa requirements and approval.   This is the student's responsiblity, but we can help to guide you through the process.

Is Bethlehem Safe?

Generally speaking, yes. In our many years here in Bethlehem, we have experienced very few problems. That said, as with travel anywhere in the world, there are always possible risks. In the West Bank in particular, there is always the potential for demonstrations or protests to flare up with little warning that can escalate quickly. Directors Melisa and Victor Lopez understand the region and what to do to take proper precautions to protect yourself and the group. Your safety is very important to us. As such, they will advise you prior to, and upon your arrival, how to best remain safe during your time with us in Bethlehem.

Where will I stay?

We have cultivated relationships with the management of several hotels in Bethlehem over the years, all of which are clean, comfortable and offer basic amenities including WiFi. We will determine in advance of each session where students will stay and the decision will be based upon season, availability and number of students.

Will I be sharing a room?

Yes, all costs for our programs are based on multiple person occupancy. If you have a specific roommate request, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate. If not, we will prayerfully match you with a roommate(s) for your time in Bethlehem. Single rooms are available for an extra cost. Please inquire if interested.

Where/what will I eat?

All meals with the exception of lunches are included in the cost of the program. Generally speaking, breakfast and dinner will be served daily in your hotel’s dining room. Breakfast will include a daily buffet of eggs, fresh breads, regional salads, fresh fruits and vegetables. Dinner buffet will include a meat option (usually chicken or fish), rice, potatoes, a large selection of regional salads, vegetables and dessert. Lunches will vary as we will be on the road many days during lunch.  We make every effort to select restaurants that feature local favorites which can be lower cost, or establishments featuring a diverse menu with something for everyone!

Small stores are located within walking distance of your hotel where will be able to purchase extra necessities like snacks, fruit and bottled water as well as toiletry items.

Are laundry facilities available?

We ask that you pack wisely to minimize the need to do laundry. However, should you need to; laundry services are available for a nominal fee in Bethlehem which is a great way to contribute to the local economy. To coordinate this you have two options: walk your bag of clothes to the nearest laundry service, or give you clothing to the front desk of your hotel and they will have it cleaned for you. Taking it to the cleaner yourself can save a bit of money, but giving it to the hotel front desk, although it costs a bit more, can be a convenient option.

How will I get to/from the airport?

Airport transfers are included in the cost of the program. Arrival and departure times will be coordinated with our Directors Victor and Melisa Lopez to ensure that all will go smoothly on the day you arrive/depart.

What is the currency in Israel?

Israel uses the shekel. Although is varies, generally 3 -3.5 NIS = 1USD. See www.xe.com for current values.

What is the best way to get spending money (in shekels) while I’m there?

There are two easy ways. The first is to bring US dollars (or your local currency) to Israel with you. There are money changers that are relatively close to the Jerusalem Institute of Multicultural Studies that can convert your currency to shekels. The second way is to use ATM machines with your credit card for cash (shekels) or to use your credit card for purchases. Note that international fees may apply (check with your credit card company for details). Also note that you must contact your credit card company and alert them to your travels (dates and countries) to avoid a hold being put on your card for suspected fraudulent activity.

Will I be able to attend church services while I’m studying in Bethlehem?

Yes! Part of our mission and purpose is to support the Christian community in Bethlehem. Each Sunday, we will attend service at Bethlehem Baptist Church which is led by Dr. Naim Khoury who sits on Board of Directors for the Jerusalem Institute of Multicultural  Studies. You will be blessed by lively worship sung in Arabic followed by a Biblically-based sermon that you will be able to hear through a live translator or an ear piece that is transmitting the translation.

What do I pack?

All students will receive a packing/preparation check list created specifically for the session they will be attending which will help them prepare well in advance of their departure.

How do I call home?

There are many options to call home including Skype, pre-paid calling cards and your mobile telephone.

If you are bringing a mobile telephone, you may want to inquire with your carrier prior to departure about international call, texting or data plans. If you don’t make advance arrangements and understand how your carriers international roaming works, you may be charged substantial unexpected fees.

Pre-paid calling cards can be purchased from some stores to make international calls. Note that this option may provide more value when used from a land line than a mobile phone.
